Uutta tutkimustietoa sauvakävelyn terveysvaikutuksista

Arvostetussa European Journal of Sport Science -lehdessä julkaistiin vastikään sauvakävelyä ja kuntosaliharjoittelua vertaileva tukimus, jonka tekemisessä ovat olleet mukana Itä-Suomen, Helsingin ja Turun yliopistot, Terveyden ja hyvinvoinnin laitos, Työterveyslaitos, ruotsalainen Karoliininen Instituutti sekä yhdysvaltalainen Syracusen yliopisto.

Tutkimuksessa verrattiin sauvakävelyn ja kuntosaliharjoittelun vaikutusta irisiini-hormonin ja lihaksen FNDC-5-proteiinin muodostumiseen keski-ikäisillä miehillä, joilla oli liikapainoa ja sokeriaineenvaihdunnan häiriö. Irisiini on lihaksesta erittyvä hormoni, jonka on todettu muun muassa vähentävän rasvan kertymistä sisäelinten ympärille ja parantavan sokeriaineenvaihduntaa. Havaittiin, että sauvakävely lisäsi irisiinin määrää, mutta kuntosaliharjoittelu ei.

"Nämä tulokset lisäävät tutkittua tietoa sauvakävelyn positiivisista vaikutuksista ja edesauttavan lajin arvostuksen nostamisessa," toteaa tutkimuksen tekemisessä mukana ollut terveysliikunnan dosentti Mika Venojärvi Itä-Suomen yliopistosta. Venojärvi on myös ICNW ry:n tieteellisen asiantuntijaneuvoston puheenjohtaja.
